3.Environment and sustainable agriculture
Thothanna has realized the decline of environment and the failure of agriculture has a main link with the poverty of the target area. The direct target groups of Thothanna survive as traditional farmers.By now they cannot survive further through agriculture.
The decline of environment has interconnected with the decline of agriculture.Under the green revolution trend these people were forced to use agrochemicals.Through leaving from their traditional agriculture these people had addicted to use tremendous agrochemicals which has caused to declined of soil and total agriculture system. As a result of this addiction we have already lost our traditional Eco-friendly techniques of pest and weed control. We have already lost our own traditional seeds. Because of too much use of agrochemicals people have to invest too much inputs. But their income has declined day by day.
The above situation has resulted to the males to be addicted to alcohol as they have become hopeless. They people has to exploit the natural resources to survive. Women cannot get a value for their labor as the males do not engage in proper agriculture. So they fly to Middle East to survive. This has caused to decline the family relationship where the children become victims of so many child rights violations.Youth do not agree further to involve in agriculture. They escape from the area to join the odd jobs in the urban areas or join the forces.Girls too have to escape to garment factories which is in a crises now.
So finding solutions against the environment decline is a must for the empowerment of the people. It can be introduced through a sustainable and Eco-friendly agriculture. If women can be encouraged to contribute the food security of the family and the community they can contribute the family well.It will grant a value for their labor too.So Thothanna has been encouraging the organized women to maintain a nutrition grove which is more than a home garden or home garden.
We have been encouraging the youth and the children too to contribute to the environment protection process through annual tree planting campaigns and encouraging sustainable Eco-friendly agriculture.
